What are Diesel Engine Exhaust Emissions

Diesel Engine Exhaust Emissions are a mixture of gases and particulate matter produced when diesel fuel is burned in engines. In workplace environments a common source of these fumes include lorries manoeuvring in loading bays. Prolonged exposure to diesel fumes can pose health risks, making proper ventilation and safety measures essential.

By reducing employees’ exposure to harmful substances and unsafe conditions, it leads to improved overall health, resulting in fewer sick days and lower absenteeism. Ultimately, investing in occupational hygiene protects employees while delivering significant financial and reputational benefits to the organization

Why it matters

The control of diesel fume is covered in the HSG187 Control of diesel engine exhaust emissions in the workplace. Although it is not precisely known which specific components of diesel combustion are responsible for harmful health effects, DEEEs have been linked to irritation of the upper respiratory tract. Diesel fumes are also known to contain carcinogenic substances, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which have been associated with an increased risk of lung cancer.
